Our patient is one of those patients who had to be treated with the utmost care, due to the great anxiety and panic of clinic treatment rooms. Panic is the word the patient used several times during his first consultation with us. We were faced with a highly complex clinical case, due to the patient’s age (extremely young) for complete rehabilitations, his anxiety and the absence or scarcity of oral health care the patient had previously received. We combined 2 different oral rehabilitation techniques in the same patient: “Teeth in 1 Day” solution on the upper jawComplex Oral Rehabilitation” solution with implants and ceramic crowns on the lower jaw. Our patient is a long-time friend who is very demanding of his aesthetics, and in this case, his dental aesthetics. Many years ago we fitted him with implants and crowns to make up for missing teeth. But the patient wanted more, he wanted to achieve a higher level of aesthetics than his own teeth offered him. We carried out virtual planning, built 2 sets of temporary teeth and delivered 12 all-ceramic crowns on the upper jaw and 12 all-ceramic crowns on the lower jaw. Complex Oral Rehabilitation 65 years old Almada Complex Oral Rehabilitation This is a treatment in which aesthetics is strongly associated and depends on the patient’s function, balance and oral and general health. With dental implants and all-ceramic crowns we will be able to build the smile you are looking for. Our patient waited several years until she was sure it was time to move on to fixed oral rehabilitation. We placed 10 dental implants, 6 in the upper jaw and 4 in the lower jaw, and a few months later we were able to deliver the ceramic crowns screwed onto the implants. The edges of the front teeth were also augmented with dental restorations to restore the vertical dimension and aesthetics of the patient’s smile. How can the patient be an integral part, have an active role in choosing the shape and colour of the teeth?
The provisional teeth are developed and designed according to the bio-type of the teeth remaining in the mouth, or through old photographs of the patient when they still had their teeth.
It is then on the provisional teeth that the patient will make their observations and criticisms so that we can make changes to what isn’t right and keep what is.
With the help of digital design programmes such as D.S.D. (Digital Smile Design), we are able to plan and make our patients’ rehabilitation very predictable.
While the implants heal in the bone, does the patient become toothless while waiting?
You don’t become toothless, as you use a set of temporary teeth that are supported by the teeth in your mouth. In some situations, we make temporary fixed teeth that are immediately attached to the implants on the same day.
Is the process painful?
It’s not painful. As well as being perfectly anaesthetised during the treatments, the therapeutic prescription and pre-, intra- and post-operative medication will mean that pain levels are very close to zero.
How long does a treatment like this take?
Depending on the extent of the treatment in terms of the number of teeth treated and the number of implants placed, the first treatment appointment will take up an entire morning for the placement of the temporary teeth and the placement of the implants.
We then wait between 2-4 months for the final phase of treatment, which will take another week or two to complete.
