General Anaesthesia

In Oral Surgery and Complex Oral Rehabilitation, General Anaesthesia can be a great asset in the treatment of mentally or neurologically disabled patients, where cooperation is limited, or simply in those cases where the patient is afraid or terrified of this type of treatment. Through general anaesthesia, patients can enjoy the comfort that comes from the absence of anxiety and pain, without compromising their safety.

Dr. Luis Pinheiro always collaborates closely with the other specialities and with each patient’s attending physicians, so that he can gather the necessary information and prepare the patient, stabilising chronic pathologies and treating acute pathologies, before the patient can undergo general anaesthesia.

There are routine tests that are ordered, such as

  • Chest X-ray
  • Electrocardiogram (E.C.G.)
  • Blood tests, the most common of which are coagulation tests, complete haematocrit and biochemical tests.

Depending on the clinical situation of each patient, Dr Luis Pinheiro, together with the Anaesthesiology Team, may request further diagnostic tests.

Ultimately, yes. However, after the necessary examinations and a medical history, the Anaesthesiology Team issues a classification called A.S.A..

For the type of surgery we do, we only operate on patients with an A.S.A. 1 and A.S.A. 2 classification. Above this value, it becomes dangerous and the patient’s pathophysiological conditions will have to be reviewed, improved and stabilised for the classification to drop from A.S.A.3 or worse to absolute safety levels.
